Your Guide to FSSAI Registration And License In India

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was established in 2008 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This statutory body falls under the administrative wing of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The FSSAI registration ensures the safety and quality of food consumed across the nation. It administers regulating food manufacturing, storage and distribution to set standards for every edible item. The licensing and registration of food businesses are administered by the Food Safety and Standards, of 2011.

FSSAI Registration Process in India in 5 Steps

Obtaining an FSSAI registration is mandatory for most food businesses operating in the country. So, ensure that you have the required documents beforehand.

Step 1: Find an FSSAI License Category

Your food business must get registered according to its nature and size. Moreover, FSSAI categorises businesses based on factors like annual turnover, manufacturing activity, and the scale of operations.

a. Basic FSSAI Registration (FBB)

It is ideal for small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs. 12 lakh. It primarily applies to petty retailers, small manufacturers, and home-based food businesses and you have to fill out Form A for that.

b. State FSSAI License

It is applied to businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 12 lakh but below Rs. 20 crore. Restaurants, caterers, small manufacturers, and processors fall into this category and you have to fill out Form B for that.

c. Central FSSAI License

It is mandatory for large food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crore. It applies to multi-state operations, food importers, and exporters and you have to fill out Form B for that.

Step 2: Online Registration

You have to complete the FSSAI registration online through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal. For that, create an account, select an appropriate registration category, fill out the online application form, upload the necessary documents and submit the form.

Step 3: Document Verification and Inspection (if applicable)

FSSAI officers will verify the uploaded documents when you submit your application. If you apply for State and Central licenses, the officers might physically inspect your food business premises.

Step 4: FSSAI Certificate Download

FSSAI will issue you an appropriate registration certificate. Use the same FoSCoS portal for the FFSAI certificate download.

You must submit documents according to the category you are applying for

Basic FSSAI Registration (FBB)

  2. Photo ID proof and address proof of all Partners (for a partnership).
  3. Photo ID proof and address proof of the President/Secretary (for a Society or a Trust).
  4. Medical fitness certificate of all your employees.
  5. Photo ID proof and address proof of Directors (for a company).
  6. Proof of address including a rental agreement, latest electricity bill or property tax receipt.
  7. Certificate of the food safety management you follow.

If you have all the documents for FSSAI registration, you may proceed to the registration process

How to Renew FSSAI License

The validity period of an FSSAI certificate (registration or license) depends on the category you obtained. For instance, the Basic FSSAI Registration (FBB) is valid for one year, the State FSSAI License is valid for one to two years and the Central FSSAI License is valid for two to five years.
Renew your FSSAI license up to 120 days before its expiry date instead of waiting until the last minute. You may even start it 180 days before the expiry date. FSSAI license renewal is mandatory as you will face penalties and your business might shut down if you have an expired license.

Here’s how to renew FSSAI license:

Step 1:

Log in to the FoSCoS Portal using your existing credentials.

Step 2:

Go to the Renewal of License and Registration category.

Step 3:

Select License for Renewal.

Step 4:

Step 5:

Step 6:

The FSSAI authorities might physically re-inspect your food business premises to verify continued compliance with regulations.
